When something’s wrong with a vehicle, you’ll hear terms like recall, TSB, or service campaign. They’re not the same—and your next steps (and costs) can be different.
Safety Recall (NHTSA)
- What it is: A safety-related defect or noncompliance with federal safety standards.
- Who issues it: Automaker, reported to NHTSA.
- Cost: Repairs are typically free at a franchised dealer.
- What to do: Run a recall check by VIN and contact your dealer if a campaign applies.

Technical Service Bulletin (TSB)
- What it is: Guidance from the automaker for technicians about known issues or improved procedures.
- Cost: Not automatically free; coverage may depend on warranty or goodwill.
- What to do: If your symptoms match a TSB, talk to the dealer’s service department.
Service Campaign / Customer Satisfaction Program
- What it is: Automaker-provided updates or fixes that aren’t formal safety recalls.
- Cost: Varies—sometimes free within certain VIN ranges or time windows.
- What to do: Ask your dealer to check your VIN for active campaigns.
